Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall Fundraiser
update
The last Sunday of summer was celebrated in a big way at Holy Trinity’s Bockhold Hall on September 20th with the 2nd Annual Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall fundraiser.
Our dining room was full of eager patrons in need of satisfying a sweet tooth. Cones, sundaes and banana splits were the order of the day as Holy Trinity enjoyed this last blast of summer with a cool and sweet treat. Nearly $600 dollars was collected from our parishioners and friendly supporters present. In addition, Mr. Mark Dollase, the Executive Director of the Marion County Historic Landmarks Foundation presented the parish with a check for an additional $4000 for the work at Bockhold Hall.
Many thanks are extended to Patty and Steve Jugg for chairing this event and ensuring its success with their tireless efforts. The members of the Stewardship Commission continue to focus efforts on a comprehensive use plan and additional fundraising for Holy Trinity’s Bockhold Hall.

Summer Concludes
With
Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall Fundraiser
Version 2.0
Summer is a short 94 days and it is concluding next month. We will soon be exchanging the roar of the air conditioner for changing leaves, shorter days, and cooler temperatures. With summer’s end rapidly approaching, the Stewardship Commission will be celebrating the last Sunday of summer by hosting the second annual Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall ice cream social following the 10:00 a.m. mass on Sunday, September 20, 2009. All parishioners and Holy Trinity’s friends are invited to attend. Last year’s event netted over $2000 profit for Bockhold Hall’s renovations, and we hope to scoop together more contributions with this year’s event. We need everyone’s help to make this fundraiser a success.
Holy Trinity will be awarded a grant from the Marion County Historic Landmarks Foundation, and will be presented with the check at our Banana Splits event. This grant money will be used as we proceed with further projects at Bockhold Hall. These difficult economic times are troubling for everyone, including philanthropic organizations. Raising funds for capital improvements in this economic environment is even more challenging than it was before the recession. We are very appreciative to the Marion County Historic Landmarks Foundation for their consideration with our project, and hope this event stimulates further enthusiasm for our efforts.
Details of the recently completed engineering report on Bockhold Hall will also be released and discussed at the Banana Splits event. The completion of the roof project in 2008 addressed the immediate physical needs of the building; however, the other repairs and projects requiring attention are also great and needs the attention of the parish. The parish focus on fundraising is critical if we are to give Bockhold Hall the attention that is required to guarantee its future. Plan to attend the Banana Splits for Bockhold Hall event on Sunday, September 20th!

Holy Trinity 500 Block Party Update
This year’s May event at the parish, the first-ever 500 Block Party, was a wonderful success story for Holy Trinity. The sun shined brightly, the crowd was large and enthusiastic, and everyone enjoyed a great party on
It seems this year’s formula for success had one critical component. That key ingredient was teamwork! The spirit of teamwork prevailed among all the members of the organizing committee during our planning meetings and carried over to the day of our event with all the assembled volunteers and members of the Altar Society! A big thank you to all who volunteered, planned, organized, and implemented the raffle and Block Party! My fellow members of the 500 Block Party Committee were Marcia Bracik,
The winners of this year’s raffle were:
The seller of the winning ticket was Joe Stevens Jr. The individual selling the most raffle tickets was Steve Rasmussen. Thanks also to all parishioners and friends of the parish that sold and bought raffle tickets.
As with hosting any event, there are lessons that are learned. The Block Party this year was no different. This year’s event was especially challenging as we moved the party to the street due to the crowded conditions of the parking lot with the construction of the Holy Family Shelter. We intend to build upon our successful experience of 2009, and do an even better job next year!
We will see you again on Friday, May 28th, 2010!

Bockhold Hall Roof Nears Completion
At the March 18th meeting of the Holy Trinity Stewardship Commission, it was reported that the replacement roof for Bockhold Hall is nearly complete. With just a few final details remaining, the work that began last summer is finally coming to conclusion. It has been a long process marked by some unfortunate delays that pushed the work into 2009. However, this replacement by our capable roofers, Blackmore and Buckner will ensure a dry Bockhold Hall for many years to come.
The old roof has been removed, drains have been reconfigured, a new hatch has been installed, and a new membrane has been sealed in place. Top it off with gravel ballast and the new roof is completed. Most parishioners will never have an opportunity to see the new roof, but rest assured it is in place and our work at Bockhold Hall can continue with other projects. Many thanks to everyone who contributed to our roof raising efforts. The focus now turns to the masonry issues on Bockhold Hall and window replacements. More to come in later Trinitarians.

To The Visitors of Our Website and the Readers of The Trinitarian,
Holy Trinity’s Bockhold Hall is a place familiar to many of you. For some, Bockhold Hall was a “big school” building where many of us spent grades 5-8. Others will recall the times spent in the gym; playing basketball, school plays, and all the great wedding receptions held there throughout the years. Some of the old timers will even fondly recall roller skating that was once part of Bockhold Hall’s history. Much of our history was written, and nearly all of our current parish activities are to be found at Bockhold Hall.
The last several years have ushered in an incredible number of changes at Holy Trinity leaving Bockhold Hall as the one and only center for parish activities. The rectory is now rented, and both Mary Carl and Lavric Halls have been demolished for the new construction of the Holy Family Shelter. With the renovation now complete at the church, it is time now to focus on the needs, maintenance, and repairs of our parish center —Bockhold Hall.
While the pealing plaster, poor flooring, and aged appearance of the rooms are readily apparent to even the untrained observer, what may not be so apparent are some of the other structural repairs that need to be made. Holy Trinity’s Stewardship Commission is working to identify all the maintenance and repair issues at Bockhold Hall. With our eyes on the future and all the imagined possibilities for our parish, we are dedicated to the restoration and renovation of Bockhold Hall. The time for action is now.
First Things First
In order to proceed with any interior renovations, our efforts must first begin with the exterior of the building to prevent water infiltration. Our twenty year roof has lasted us more than thirty years, but the time has come NOW for its replacement. The Stewardship Commission voted unanimously at the April meeting to re-roof Bockhold Hall in 2008.
In addition, there is a large amount of masonry work that must be completed, especially on the south and west sides of the building. There is a great need to stop further water damage by thoroughly tuck pointing the building, and repairing all the mortar joints, as well as replacing failing lintels. While the masonry work and roof replacement doesn’t improve the environment on the inside of the building, it is absolutely necessary to Bockhold Hall’s future and to safeguard our upcoming interior renovations.
Wish Lists
The parish-wide wish list is great for Bockhold Hall and includes such things as: handicap accessibility for the gym, a remodeled dining room, a Resource Center/Library, remodeled bathrooms, replacement windows, kitchen upgrades, carpeting, and air conditioning. The last time a significant amount of money was spent on Bockhold Hall was during our 90th anniversary year, which was 1996. Most of that work was completed on the building’s exterior.
Costs and Preparation
The commitment to move forward with the repairs and renovation of Bockhold Hall will be a demonstration of faithfulness to our parish future. Bockhold Hall was not completed in 1926 without sacrifice and a commitment to the future of the Holy Trinity parish family. Our predecessors were looking to the future and were optimistic. We must follow their example and also look to the future. Bockhold Hall can be a wonderful multi-use facility for our entire parish to use. It has been built and paid for and we will attend to its maintenance and repair. The costs will be significant, and we will need some help. The estimates for the completion of the masonry work and roof replacement alone is above $250,000.
Starting on Sunday, May 18th (Trinity Sunday) we will begin a novena for our Bockhold Hall efforts. This special time of prayer will be repeated the following eight Sundays following the ancient tradition of the church. What better way to begin such a significant parish project? Please begin to think about your response to our invitation to join us in the efforts at Bockhold Hall. Stay tuned to The Trinitarian for future updates regarding our “Hopes for Bockhold Hall”.
Letter from Father John
Dear Friends and Family of Holy Trinity,
I hope you had the chance to read my letter about the wonderful things happening at Holy Trinity and about our plans for the future.
With the arrival of the Holy Family Shelter, Bockhold Hall will become the center of parish activity. Like it has done for many years, Bockhold Hall will meet the needs of our parish community as well as our many guests for many years to come. Like any building with many years of age, it is in need of much TLC. Through the generosity of Mr. Raymond Medvesek and his estate we have some resources to begin some work on the building. However, as you look over the pictures you will realize our need is great.
That is why we need your help. We are asking all of our friends and family, over 400, who receive the Trinitarian to make a contribution for the repair of Bockhold Hall. Our hope is to have an average gift of $250 per household. We know that for some it may be difficult to do while others are capable of more. Through our collective generosity of equal sacrifice, not equal treasure, we hope to raise over $100,000 for the repair of Bockhold. We have many dreams for Holy Trinity. Will you help us to achieve them?
May God Bless and Keep you,
Fr. John McCaslin

Hunger USA
Hunger here in the richest nation in the world? Impossible, one might think. But the U.S. Conference of Mayors’ annual Hunger and Homelessness Survey makes it clear that hunger and food insecurity (not always having access to enough food to meet basic needs) not only exist, but are on the rise. The increase is reflected in the fact that the two dozen cities surveyed found that requests for ...
